Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art

The Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art is a prefectural art museum located in the Chuo ward of Sapporo, Japan. Inaugurated in 1977, it serves as a primary cultural institution dedicated to both international modern art and regional artistic heritage. The museum is distinguished by its focused acquisitions of works by the École de Paris and Jules Pascin, alongside a strong commitment to modern Japanese artists, particularly those with ties to Hokkaido. It also functions as the central hub for a network of five related prefectural art museums scattered across the region.

Plans for a new prefectural art museum were first proposed in July 1971. Construction commenced on August 1, 1974, and concluded on June 30, 1977. The institution officially opened to the public the following month, on July 20, 1977. Over its decades of operation, the museum has achieved significant milestones in public engagement and scholarly recognition, notably reaching ten million visitors in July 2013. It has also received various national and international awards in recognition of its exhibitions and published catalogs.

The museum organizes its holdings into five primary categories: art in Hokkaido, modern Japanese art, the École de Paris, contemporary glass art, and contemporary art. Beyond these core areas, the institution maintains specialized collections, such as European prints spanning from the Renaissance to the modern era. The collection is notably strong in modernist and contemporary glasswork, as well as canvases from the School of Paris. As of March 2024, the total inventory comprised 6,069 items.

Signature works within the collection include pieces by Jules Pascin, a central figure in the museum's École de Paris holdings. The regional and modern Japanese representation is anchored by works from artists connected to Hokkaido, specifically Tamako Kataoka, Eien Iwahashi, Kinjiro Kida, and Nissho Kanda. The museum's modernist and contemporary glassware collection further distinguishes its permanent holdings from other regional Japanese institutions.

The museum building was designed through a collaboration between architect Minoru Ota and the museum's architectural team. It sits on a 19,470.6 square meter site and features a total floor area of 9,143.7 square meters, with 5,261.9 square meters of constructed building footprint. The structure is primarily composed of reinforced concrete and rises three stories above ground with one basement level, reaching a height of 19.7 meters at the eaves. The roofing consists of exposed, waterproofed asphalt with embedded incrustations. Of the total floor space, 2,871.4 square meters are dedicated specifically to exhibition galleries. The surrounding museum grounds function as an outdoor sculpture garden displaying modern sculptural works.
