Hokkaido Obihiro Museum of Art

The Hokkaido Obihiro Museum of Art is a prefectural art museum located in Midorigaoka Park, Obihiro, Hokkaido, Japan. Opened in September 1991 as the fifth annex of the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, it serves as a leading cultural institution for eastern Hokkaido. The museum has established itself as a regional center for art, focusing on works by artists connected to eastern Hokkaido, modern and contemporary print art, and Western landscape and genre paintings, particularly those of the Barbizon school.

The museum opened in September 1991 as the fifth Hokkaido Prefectural Art Museum, making it the newest addition to the prefectural museum system at that time. Situated in Obihiro, a core city of eastern Hokkaido located in the middle of the Tokachi Plain, it was established to serve as a cultural center for the entire region. Since its founding, the institution has maintained an active exhibition program, holding collection-based themed exhibitions several times annually in its Collection Gallery, along with four to five special exhibitions per year in its Main Exhibition Room that introduce works from Japan and abroad across various genres. The museum also organizes lectures and other educational events aimed at fostering lifelong engagement with art.

The museum's collection is organized around three principal pillars: works by leading artists associated with eastern Hokkaido; modern and contemporary prints, posters, and other print art from Japan and overseas; and Western landscape and genre paintings, with particular emphasis on the Barbizon school. As of recent reports, the collection comprises approximately 853 works. The Barbizon school, a 19th-century French realist movement, holds special significance for the museum because its focus on rural landscapes and peasant life resonates with Hokkaido's own natural environment and agricultural culture. The Hokkaido Obihiro Museum of Art is located at Midorigaoka 2, Midorigaoka Park, in Obihiro City. It is accessible by bus from JR Obihiro Station, approximately 15 minutes to the Midorigaoka Koen Park stop. Specific bus routes include the Hokkaido Takushoku Bus number 25 Obihiro no Mori Line, alighting at Midorigaoka 6 and walking 2 minutes, or the Tokachi Bus number 3 Minamishosen Line to the Midorigaoka Fire Station stop, from which it is a 3-minute walk. Operating hours are 9:30 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30. The museum is closed on Mondays, except when Monday is a national holiday, in which case it is open that Monday but closed the following Tuesday. It is also closed from December 29 to January 3 and for exhibition rehanging. Admission is 400 yen for general visitors, 200 yen for high school students, and free for junior high school students and younger.
