Museum of Contemporary Art Chengdu

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chengdu, commonly abbreviated as MoCA (Chinese: 成都当代美术馆), is a contemporary art museum in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, in the People's Republic of China. Opened in 2011, the institution sits within the Chengdu Tianfu Software Park and presents contemporary art from both China and international sources. Its founding represented a significant addition to China's expanding network of contemporary art institutions during a period of rapid cultural infrastructure development.

The museum opened in 2011 in a building designed by architect Liu Jiakun, who had received the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Construction was funded by Chengdu High-Tech Zone Investment Co. Ltd., a state-owned enterprise. The museum's first director was Lü Peng, an art historian, critic, and curator. In its early years, the institution focused primarily on temporary exhibitions rather than maintaining a permanent display. By 2014, the museum had not yet established a presentation of its permanent collection, though it had opened gallery spaces for temporary exhibitions of modern art and photographic art.

MoCA Chengdu's programming encompasses contemporary art from China and around the world. The museum's exhibition strategy has emphasized both Asian artists and Western artists, with a particular strength in hosting retrospectives and collaborative international projects. Its institutional partnerships have extended to major European museums, facilitating cross-cultural presentation of contemporary works.

The museum has hosted retrospectives of Western artists including Tony Cragg, Michael Pinsky, and Pablo Picasso. A significant institutional collaboration occurred with the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, through which the museum presented works by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Douglas Gordon, Pierre Huyghe, Ange Leccia, and Philippe Parreno.

The museum building was designed by Liu Jiakun, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect. The structure is located within the Chengdu Tianfu Software Park, a technology and business development zone in Chengdu. This siting within a high-tech commercial district rather than a traditional cultural quarter reflects the museum's integration with the city's contemporary economic and urban development priorities.
