Ryūshū Shūtaku, a Zen monk, walked Kyoto's backstreets in worn robes, sketching gods on scraps of paper between temple duties. He kept returning to one subject: Fudō Myōō, the angry blue deity of fire, flanked by two wide-eyed children. In that triptych the color bleeds like spilled ink, the children's faces caught as if mid-giggle.
