The Severe Father is a 1553 by Heinrich Aldegrever, a Northern Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving shows a chaotic scene with two struggling men. One is older, with a wild beard, grabbing the other—a younger man—who’s tangled in his arms. The older man’s face is twisted in anger, while the younger one looks trapped. Above them, a broken column leans, and a scroll with Latin text hangs on the wall. The older man’s grip is so tight it looks painful, and the younger man’s expression shows fear. The Latin text at the top seems to explain the scene, but it’s hard to read. Next, check out the Renaissance movement for more dramatic stories in art.
Heinrich Aldegrever or Aldegraf was a German painter and engraver. He was one of the "Little Masters", the group of German artists making small old master prints in the generation after Albrecht Dürer.
