Reynard the Fox: Reynard Appears at Court is a 1662 by Allart van Everdingen, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a fox standing tall in front of a group of animals. The fox looks confident, facing a lion and other beasts that seem uneasy or curious. The ground is messy with tangled lines, maybe bushes or rocks, and the animals are drawn in rough, sketchy strokes. The fox’s bold pose makes it the clear leader here. The artist used sharp contrasts between light and dark to show depth, even though it’s just a print. Next, check out chiaroscuro to see how this effect works in other art.
Allaert van Everdingen (Dutch pronunciation: ; bapt. 18 June 1621 – 8 November 1675 (buried)), was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker in etching and mezzotint.
