Christ before Pilate is a 1513 ink by Albrecht Altdorfer, a Renaissance work, depicting Beheaded Head, held at National Gallery of Art.
This woodcut shows a dramatic scene. Jesus stands before Pontius Pilate. A crowd watches. Detailed armor and robes fill the left side. Lines are strong and dark. Altdorfer used a sharp tool to carve the image into wood. Then ink rolled over it. Paper pressed down to make each copy. Prints like this spread ideas fast in the 1500s.
