Reverberations of Taiga, Volume 1 (leaf 9) is a 1704 by Aoki Shukuya, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This ink sketch shows a few clustered trees beside a rocky stream. The lines are light and loose but still show solid shapes. You can almost feel the quiet mood. Shukuya trained under Ikeno Taiga, a top landscape painter. Like students today, he copied his teacher’s work first. These sheets feel like study notes—quick but full of life. See it in person at The Cleveland Museum of Art.
Traditionally, young painters in Japan began their studies with an established master-painter. The master's compositions invariably became models that the apprentice copied to learn various ink and brush techniques. Shukuya was a pupil of the famous Kyoto artist Ikeno Taiga, whose style is reflected in these sketches of rocks, trees, and mountains.
