About this work

This painting shows a courtyard of a temple. There are many people standing around, some in the shadows and others in the light. The walls are made of large stone blocks. The people are all dressed in old-fashioned clothing, and some of them are wearing hats or headscarves. There's a big piece of fabric hanging from the ceiling, which adds to the sense of depth in the painting. If you want to see more paintings that use dramatic lighting, check out the technique of chiaroscuro.
