Von Kluck is a 1914 by Auguste Lepère, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This drawing shows a man in a military uniform, facing sideways. His collar has a badge, and his hair is gray. The left side is a simple line sketch, but the right side is darker, with swirling lines in the background like stormy waves. The artist signed it "Von Kluck," which was the name of a German military leader during World War I. The contrast between the calm portrait and the chaotic background might reflect tensions of the time. Check out chiaroscuro to see how artists use light and shadow like this.
Louis-Auguste Lepère (30 November 1849 – 20 November 1918) was a French painter and etcher. Lepère is also considered a leader in the creative revival of wood engraving in Europe.
