About this work

This sketch shows three quick drawings on light paper. On the left is a cow’s head, its horns and neck drawn in loose, wavy lines. On the right are two faces—a woman with her hand on her cheek, and a man with his hand on his ear. The lines are simple and sketchy, almost like doodles. These drawings look like practice studies, not finished art. The ink is thin and the strokes are fast, as if Gauguin was testing shapes and expressions.
