Its early ownership appears to have remained within the Duncombe family in England, passing from Thomas Duncombe to successive heirs including Charles Slingsby Duncombe, the 1st baron Feversham, and later William Duncombe, 2nd baron Feversham. The painting entered the London art market through Sir Charles A. Turner in 1892, was sold at Christie's in 1908, and subsequently acquired by Charles Fairfax Murray before being purchased by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation in 1933; it was gifted to the National Gallery of Art in 1939.
