Christ before Caiaphas is a 1558 ink by Crispin van den Broeck, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a tense scene with a half-naked man in the center—Christ—standing before a group of older men in robes. The men are seated on a raised platform, some holding scrolls or pointing at Christ, while others gesture sharply. Outside, a building and a ship are faintly drawn in the background, adding a sense of place. Notice how the artist used quick, sketchy lines to show movement and emotion, especially in Christ’s posture and the angry faces around him. The blue wash gives the whole scene a cool, almost ghostly tone. Look up more about the technique: cross-hatching to see how artists build depth with lines.
