Il Solimano, Act II is a 1620 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white scene shows a grand stage set with tall, empty buildings and statues on pedestals. A crowd of people in old-fashioned clothes stands in the center, some holding banners or standing in groups. The stage looks like a city with arches and columns, but it’s clearly fake—just painted backdrops. The tiny text at the bottom labels parts of the scene: "Rus," "Sol," and "Reg." These likely stand for characters or themes in the play, since this is a stage design. The lines and shading give it a dramatic, almost shadowy look. Next, check out how this was made using etching.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
