Saint Jerome Instructing his Disciples in the Desert is a 1610 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows a group of people sitting under a tree in a desert. One man stands holding a staff, pointing at a book while others listen. The background has rough, textured lines for trees and rocks, and the whole scene is drawn in black ink with lots of shading. Notice how the artist used tiny parallel lines to build up dark areas—this is called cross-hatching. It gives the scene depth and makes the figures look three-dimensional. Try looking up cross-hatching to see how other artists use it.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
