The Agony in the Garden is a 1624 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a dark, moonlit scene with three figures. One person kneels in prayer, hands clasped, while another stands nearby holding a staff. A third figure, possibly an angel, hovers above, casting a soft glow. Trees frame the scene, and a small building with a cross sits in the background. The angel’s light cuts through the shadows, making the figures stand out. The artist used fine lines to create texture, like the rough bark on the trees or the folds in the clothing. This kind of drawing is called an etching. Check out the technique: etching to see how artists like this made detailed prints.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
