A Gondola: End View is a 1700 oil by Luca Carlevarijs, a Baroque work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
You see a close-up of a Venetian gondola’s end. The wood is dark, polished. Light catches its curves and the carved ornament at the top. The background is just a hint of water and sky. This small painting feels like a quick sketch turned into oil. Artists often did these to study light and form before bigger works. Check out Carlevarijs, Luca next.
This oil sketch by Luca Carlevarijs depicts the stern view of a gondola, part of a collection of fifty-three preparatory studies likely painted outdoors. The work belongs to a series of quick, colour-daubed sketches known as *macchiette*, which Carlevarijs used to capture subjects such as figures and objects before incorporating them into his formal compositions. These studies served as the foundation for his later Venetian *vedute* paintings, a genre he is credited with establishing in the early 18th century.
