Overview

An oil painting by Margaret Sarah Carpenter from 1816 depicts an elderly woman dressed in a cloak and bonnet, seated at a spinning wheel. The work, one of her earliest known genre scenes, was exhibited that year at the British Institute under the title *An Old Woman Spinning Silk*. The painting may have been trimmed before its acquisition, as its current dimensions differ from the recorded exhibition size. It was bequeathed to the collection in 1870 by John M. Parsons.
