About this work

This sketch shows three people in a crowded, smoky room. A woman in a fancy dress with ruffles stands between two men. One man wears a tall black hat and looks shocked, while the other smokes a pipe and leans in. The lines are loose and quick, like a hurried drawing. The woman’s dress is detailed, but the men’s faces are exaggerated—big eyes, wide mouths. The title hints this might be a joke about mistaken identities at a carnival.
