Walchensee im Nebel (Walchensee in Fog) is a 1920 ink by Lovis Corinth, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a foggy lake surrounded by bare trees and rolling hills. The brushstrokes are loose and quick, leaving the scene blurry and dreamy. Darker patches hint at water and distant land, but details fade into the mist. The artist used a printing method called lithography, where the image is drawn directly on a smooth stone. This explains the sketchy, almost pencil-like quality of the lines. Check out more about lithography to see how it works.
Lovis Corinth was a German artist and writer whose mature work as a painter and printmaker realized a synthesis of impressionism and expressionism.
