About this work

This scene shows a group of soldiers on horseback and foot near a waterfront. Ships sit in the harbor, and a fortified wall rises in the background. People are loading supplies onto boats while others watch or work. The lines are sharp and detailed, with no color—just black and white. Notice how the artist used fine lines to show texture, like the soldiers’ armor and the ships’ ropes. This was a common trick in etchings to make details pop. Try looking up etching to see how artists like this carved images into metal plates.
