Twenty Pages and Five Turkish Horses is a 1633 ink by Stefano Della Bella, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows a long row of men on horseback. They’re all dressed the same—wearing feathered hats, coats, and boots. Some horses are walking, some are rearing up. The background is just a plain, dark sky with no clouds. Look closer: the artist wrote notes below, naming the horses and riders. One horse is called "Rubino," and it’s decorated with gold. Stefano della Bella (18 May 1610 – 12 July 1664) was an Italian draughtsman and printmaker known for etchings of a great variety of subjects, including military and court scenes, landscapes, and lively genre scenes.
