"'t Suynighe Waertje" and "De Goelicke Waerdin" is a 1564 ink by Johannes van Doetechum the Elder, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows two black-and-white portraits side by side. Both faces are framed in ovals with a textured border. The person on the left has a white wig and a serious expression. The one on the right wears a dark collar and looks thoughtful, with a smaller wig or cap. These portraits were made using a printing method that creates fine lines. The artist used shading to show wrinkles and fabric details. Look up etching to see how this technique works.
Joannes van Doetecum the Elder (1530 – 1605) was a Dutch engraver-cartographer known for his etched works after genre scenes by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and maps of various cities in the Netherlands.
