Soldiers Resting (recto) is a 1878 by Édouard Detaille, a Impressionism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a group of soldiers taking a break. One man on horseback stands guard, holding his rifle. The others sit or lean against a stone archway, some resting their rifles nearby. A few look tired, one even sleeps while another reads a paper. The background fades into a distant cityscape. Notice how the artist captures the soldiers’ relaxed poses—some slouching, one leaning against the wall. The sketch feels quick and real, like a snapshot of a moment.
