He was particularly interested in how light falls on water and land. Check out the technique of glazing to learn more about how artists like Ezdorf created depth and atmosphere in their work.

The story of this work

Overview

Under a stormy sky, a torrent is lit from the left by a bright light, leaving the rest of the scene in shadow. In the right background stands a group of trees, while in the left foreground a small stilted structure appears beside a man seen in profile and two sheep. The work is attributed to Christian Ezdorf, a landscape specialist who trained in Munich and traveled in Scandinavia. It was bequeathed to the museum by the Rev. Townshend, whose collection included contemporary European landscape paintings.
