The Torrent is a 1850 oil by Christian Ezdorf, a German Romanticism work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
You see a landscape with a rushing stream and trees in this painting. The artist likely painted this scene while traveling in Scandinavia, where he studied nature closely. He was particularly interested in how light falls on water and land. Check out the technique of glazing to learn more about how artists like Ezdorf created depth and atmosphere in their work.
Under a stormy sky, a torrent is lit from the left by a bright light, leaving the rest of the scene in shadow. In the right background stands a group of trees, while in the left foreground a small stilted structure appears beside a man seen in profile and two sheep. The work is attributed to Christian Ezdorf, a landscape specialist who trained in Munich and traveled in Scandinavia. It was bequeathed to the museum by the Rev. Townshend, whose collection included contemporary European landscape paintings.
