Germania before the Judges is a 1916 ink by Jean-Louis Forain, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a tall figure in a long robe, standing stiffly with one hand on their hip. Behind them, a faint outline of a crowd or building is barely visible. The lines are rough and scratchy, like quick notes on paper. The artist used quick, uneven strokes to suggest movement and tension. The figure looks serious, almost angry, with a pointed hat and a cloak that swirls around them. Next, look up cross-hatching to see how artists build shadows with layers of lines.
Jean-Louis Forain (French pronunciation: ; 23 October 1852 – 11 July 1931) was a French Impressionist painter and printmaker, working in media including oils, watercolour, pastel, etching and lithograph.
