This sketch shows a crowded bar scene with three people in the foreground. Two men in black top hats lean on the bar, while a woman in a dark dress stands behind it, holding a tray. The lines are loose and quick, giving the whole scene a busy, sketchy feel. The artist used a technique called etching—scratching into a metal plate to create the lines—so the marks look slightly fuzzy and layered. Next, check out etching to see how artists like Forain made prints like this.
