Suspension d'audience (Recess of the Hearing) is a 1914 ink by Jean-Louis Forain, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a crowded courtroom scene. A judge sits in the center, arms resting on a high bench, looking down. Around him, lawyers and people in the gallery lean forward, some standing, others sitting, all focused on the bench. The lines are rough and quick, like a hurried sketch. The artist used a scratchy, textured style that makes the scene feel alive but unfinished. This is a lithograph, which means it was drawn directly onto a stone before being printed. Check out lithography to see how this technique works.
