A drawing from a volume of 130 works depicting Macau, Guangzhou, and surrounding areas, this work shows the Red Fort on the Pearl River’s north bank in the Honan district, with Tanka boats moored alongside. The fort, often mistaken for the Haizhu or ‘Dutch folly’ fort, faced the foreign ‘factories’ of Canton (Guangzhou). The album, containing 93 drawings by George Chinnery, was bequeathed in 1928 by James Orange. Chinnery, a British artist active in India and China, settled in Macau in 1825, where he worked until his death in 1852.
