Mocking of Christ is a 1490 ink by German 15th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows a chaotic scene with five figures. One man in the center, wearing a crown of thorns and a loose robe, is being mocked. Another figure holds a reed like a scepter, while a third, with a strange hat, points upward. The background is a flat blue sky with a few wavy lines, and the colors are bright but faded, like old paint. Notice how the figures are stiff and angular, almost like carved shapes. This style was common in prints made from woodblocks at the time. Look up technique: woodcut to see how artists like this made multiple copies of their work.
This 15th-century German artist carved vivid religious scenes into metal and wood, then hand-painted them in bright, symbolic colors.
