Saint Catherine [verso] is a 1470 by German 15th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This looks like a piece of old paper with dark, uneven marks all over it. The colors are mostly browns and blacks, mixed with some faded white spots. The edges are rough, and the center has a few lighter patches where the print might have worn away. This is actually the back of a painting called *Saint Catherine*—the front was painted, but this side shows the paper underneath. The marks you see are from a printing method called paste print, which used glue and pigment. Next, check out the technique: chiaroscuro to see how artists used light and shadow in Renaissance art.
This 15th-century German artist carved vivid religious scenes into metal and wood, then hand-painted them in bright, symbolic colors.
