The Flight into Egypt is a 1490 ink by German 15th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows three figures on a grassy path. The man on the left holds a staff and looks back over his shoulder. The woman in the middle wears a red robe and carries a baby wrapped in cloth. Behind them, a tree and a yellow pole stand out against a blue sky. Notice the rough, blocky lines and flat colors—this isn’t painted but carved into wood and then colored by hand. Look up woodcut next to see how artists made prints like this before photography.
This 15th-century German artist carved vivid religious scenes into metal and wood, then hand-painted them in bright, symbolic colors.
