La desgraciada muerte de Pepe Illo en la plaza de Madrid (The Unlucky Death of Pepe Illo in the Ring at Madrid) is a 1816 ink by Francisco Goya, a Romanticism work, depicting Bull, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a bullfighter on the ground, his arm twisted as a bull rears above him. Blood stains the sand. Three men in the ring try to pull the bull away. Pepe Illo was a real bullfighter. Goya saw this scene in Madrid. The artist used sharp lines to make the moment feel urgent and real. Look up Francisco Goya’s other bullfighting prints for more.
Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (; Spanish: ; 30 March 1746 – 16 April 1828) was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker.
