An Ornamental Trophy is a 1736 graphite by Hubert François Gravelot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows a fancy, symmetrical design with a crown-like shape at the top. Inside the circle, there’s a small figure holding a shield with a coat of arms. Around it, leaves and scrollwork twist outward, framed by a pink border. The artist used light pencil lines to sketch details that could be copied later. This style was common for designs meant to be transferred to other surfaces. Next, check out the Baroque movement to see more dramatic, detailed art like this.
Hubert-François Bourguignon, commonly known as Gravelot (26 March 1699 – 20 April 1773), was a French engraver, a famous book illustrator, designer and drawing-master.
