Sawley Abbey is a 1873 ink by Francis Seymour Haden, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a quiet countryside scene with a winding road and a river cutting through open fields. A few sheep graze near the water, and a cluster of trees lines the horizon. In the distance, a row of small buildings and a church sit beside a bridge, all drawn in loose, quick lines. The artist used a technique called etching, where lines are scratched into a metal plate before ink is applied. This method lets you see both sharp edges and soft shading at once. Next, check out etching to see how it works.
