About this work

This sketch shows a woman in a long dress standing under an umbrella, holding a small bag. Next to her is a boy in a short jacket, looking down. The ground is wet, with puddles and scattered debris around them. The artist used quick, crisscrossed lines to fill in shadows and textures, giving it a sketchy, unfinished look. The title hint at a moment where the woman was startled. Check out cross-hatching to see how artists build shading with lines.
