By descent it passed to John Brown Francis, who retained it until it was purchased in 1981 by Peter Tillou Gallery in Litchfield, Connecticut. The same year the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, acquired the work from the gallery.
It remained in the Corcoran’s collection until 2015, when it was transferred to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., where it resides today.

Prior to this transfer, the painting resided in the Corcoran Gallery of Art, having been purchased there in 1981 from the Peter Tillou Gallery in Litchfield, Connecticut.
