Mulier Svevica Inferioris Conditionis is a 1642 ink by Wenceslaus Hollar, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a woman in old-fashioned clothes. She’s holding a basket of fruit in one hand and a bunch of keys on a string in the other. Her dress is long and loose, with a fur collar and a cap on her head. The ground looks like a simple line at the bottom. The title at the bottom, *Mulier Svevica Inferioris Conditionis*, hints this might show a woman of lower status in Swiss society. The artist used shading to give the clothes texture and depth. Look up etching to see how this technique works.
Wenceslaus Hollar (Czech: Václav Hollar (Czech pronunciation: ), German: Wenzel Hollar; 23 July 1607 – 25 March 1677) was a Czech engraver, etcher and painter.
