Holy Family and Four Saints is a 1739 ink by John Baptist Jackson, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This scene shows a woman holding a baby while two other children play at her feet. Around them, four robed figures kneel or stand, some with books or tools. A winged angel floats on the left, and a throne-like chair sits behind the woman. The background is filled with swirling patterns and gold accents. The artist used deep shadows and light to create a dramatic, three-dimensional effect. This was a common trick in Baroque art to pull viewers into the scene. John Baptist Jackson (1701–1780) was a British artist, a woodcut printmaker of the eighteenth century.
