The work originated during a trip Ruisdael made in the early 1650s to Bentheim in western Germany, just across the border, where he travelled with the painter Nicolaes Berchem. The visit inspired him to depict the castle more than a dozen times across his career; this canvas, known as the Dublin version, is regarded as the most significant of that series.
The painting measures 110.5 × 144 cm and is catalogued as number 15 in Seymour Slive's 2001 catalogue raisonné of Ruisdael. It has been in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin since 1987, and was included in the Mauritshuis's 2009 exhibition "Groeten uit Bentheim," which brought together Ruisdael's various Bentheim Castle paintings.
