French Landscape is a 1886 by John Henry Twachtman, a Impressionism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
Twachtman’s *French Landscape* shows soft hills, a winding river, and a small boat near the shore. The colors are muted blues and greens, with loose brushstrokes that feel almost unfinished. This sketchy style was new at the time. He likely worked outdoors, copying the way light moved across the land. Some art critics think this was a quick study, not a final painting. Look for Twachtman’s later works at The Cleveland Museum of Art.
The extremely free handling of this composition, reminiscent of prints by Pissarro or Corot (both also in this exhibition), suggests that Twachtman made the etching from nature.
