John Henry Twachtman created the oil-on-canvas painting Winter Harmony in 1895. The work was purchased circa 1900 directly from the artist by Mrs. Lucius Horatio Bigelow (née Anna Gates Graham) of New York. Upon her death in 1919, the painting passed by inheritance to her daughter, Mrs. Edward Lathrop Ballard (née Elizabeth Gates Bigelow), who resided in New York and Ridgefield, Connecticut.
In 1963, the piece was consigned to Coleman Auction Galleries in New York, where it was sold on November 15 under the title Winter Scene. Following the auction, it was acquired by Ira Spanierman and subsequently sold to Vose Galleries in Boston later that same year. The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., purchased the work in 1964, where it remains part of the permanent collection.
Winter Harmony is held by the National Gallery of Art, which acquired it in 1964 after purchasing it from Vose Galleries, Boston. It was previously owned by Mrs. Lucius Horatio Bigelow and later by her daughter, Mrs. Edward Lathrop Ballard, before being sold at auction in 1963.
