The story of this work

Overview

This final drawing for a woodblock print, known as a hanshita-e, belongs to Katsushika Hokusai's early Shunro period (1779–1794), during which he signed works as Shunro. One of ten surviving drawings from this group, it reflects the style of his signature adopted from 1784 onward and measures in chuban size. The signature "Shunro ga" appears on the work, which was later acquired from Mr. Hogitaro Inada and accessioned in 1910.
