Chushingura: Act VII (from the series Perspective Pictures for The Treasure House of Loyalty) is a 1794 by Kitao Masayoshi, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This scene shows a busy courtyard at night, packed with people in traditional robes. Some are standing, others sit or crouch near tables, while a few walk or chat. Lanterns cast soft light on the wooden floors and tiled roofs, and a moon glows faintly above the distant hills. The background is filled with more figures, trees, and buildings, all drawn in careful detail. The artist used bold outlines and flat colors to create a lively, crowded atmosphere. Notice how the lanterns and moonlight guide your eyes across the scene, making it feel alive and full of movement. Next, check out The Cleveland Museum of Art to see more works like this.
