Winter is a 1750 ink by Joseph Sebastian Klauber, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This scene looks like a busy winter night in a city. A crowd of people in old-fashioned clothes gathers under a temple-like building, some standing, others kneeling. Above them, angels float in the starry sky, while a dramatic storm swirls with dark clouds and swirling wind. At the bottom, a few kids play near a broken column, and a dog lies on the ground. The edges of the print curve with ornate scrollwork, framing the whole scene like a stage. The top of the print has Latin text, which hints this might be telling a story from the Bible. The mix of heavenly figures and earthly chaos suggests it’s an *allegory*—a picture with deeper meaning. If you like this style, check out the technique: etching, drypoint, aquatint.
