Subsequently, the painting was held by Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy B. Middendorf of Oyster Bay, New York, and was offered for sale by the Middendorf Gallery in Washington, D.C. In 1985, the piece was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon of Upperville, Virginia.
It remained in their possession until 1992, when it was gifted to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where it is currently held.

The Mellons had acquired the painting in 1985 through the Middendorf Gallery in Washington, D.C., from Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy B. Middendorf of Oyster Bay, New York. Earlier in the twentieth century, the work was held by Mr. and Mrs. Harrison G. Reynolds of Beverly Farms, Massachusetts, around 1940, and prior to that it resided in a private collection in Boston. The provenance reflects a continuous chain of private ownership before entering the NGA's holdings as a gift.
