Fording a River (Le gue) is a 1874 ink by Alphonse Legros, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows two dogs wading through shallow water, surrounded by tall reeds. The lines are loose and quick, like the artist was drawing fast. The dogs look focused on moving forward, and the water and plants blur around them. The artist used a technique that lets ink fill in the scratched lines, making the dark marks pop against the light background. This style was popular in the 1800s for its expressive, almost sketchy feel. Next, check out etching to see how artists like this one create prints.
