Old Inn (Une ancienne auberge) is a 1874 ink by Alphonse Legros, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows an old wooden house with a slanted roof, partly hidden by trees. A horse stands near the left side, tied to a post. The building has a small porch with a railing, and the roof looks weathered. The artist used lots of crosshatching—tiny lines crisscrossing—to show shadows and texture. Notice how the trees and bushes are just as detailed as the house, almost like they’re part of the same solid shape. The artist didn’t smooth things out; everything looks rough and real.
