Egypt and Nubia, Volume III: Interview with the Viceroy of Egypt, at his Palace, Alexandria is a 1848 by Louis Haghe, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This room looks like a mix of a meeting and a gathering. A group of men in different clothes—some in military uniforms, others in robes and turbans—stand or sit around. A few are talking, one is writing on a low table, and another holds a paper. Outside the open windows, ships float on a calm sea under a cloudy sky. Red curtains frame the scene, and a big column stands in the corner. Notice how the artist used light to show depth—dark shadows under the furniture and bright spots on faces. The mix of clothing styles hints at a moment where different cultures or groups came together. If you like this, check out Romanticism to see how artists used drama and detail like this.
Louis Haghe (17 March 1806 – 9 March 1885) was a lithographer and watercolourist from the Netherlands and then the United Kingdom.
