Fantasy on Faust

Mariano Fortuny Marsal created Fantasy on Faust in 1866, specifically after July 20 of that year, following his arrival in Madrid. The work was executed in the studio of painter Francesc Sans i Cabot as a dedication to pianist Juan Bautista Pujol i Riu, who had premiered his own Gran fantasía based on Charles Gounod's opera Faust earlier that March. Fortuny inscribed the canvas "Recordando vuestra fantasía sobre Fausto" to commemorate the event.

The painting was originally gifted to Pujol, entering his personal collection. Pujol subsequently sold the work to Ramón de Errazu, a transaction he later regretted and attempted to reverse. Errazu eventually donated the piece to the Museo del Prado in 1904, where it was initially regarded as the most significant oil painting in the Fortuny bequest.

The painting is held in the Museo del Prado, where it was acquired in 1904 from Ramón de Errazu, who had purchased it from Juan Bautista Pujol i Riu, the pianist to whom Mariano Fortuny dedicated and gifted the work. It was first exhibited at the Prado in 1904 and later recognized as the most important oil painting by Fortuny in the museum’s collection. The work has been reproduced on several occasions.

The painting was later gifted by Fortuny to Pujol, then sold to Ramón de Errazu, and acquired by the Museo del Prado in 1904, where it became recognized as the most significant oil painting by Fortuny in his bequeathed collection. The work's composition and improvisational style, described by Sans i Cabot as executed in 'alla prima' technique, parallel the intensity of the musical performance and the fantastical atmosphere of Goethe's Faust, as interpreted through Fortuny's visual language of light, color, and symbolic elements such as the white owl.

Upon its initial exhibition at the Museo del Prado, critics regarded this canvas as the most significant oil painting by Fortuny within the Errazu bequest. The work's impact extended to contemporary peers; Federico de Madrazo, the artist's father-in-law, produced a compositionally similar painting titled The Dream of Atropos shortly after viewing it. Furthermore, the scene inspired fellow attendees Agapito Francés and Llorenç Casanova to create their own sketches based on the same musical performance. The painting's legacy also includes being copied on multiple occasions in later years.
